Immersing themselves in full throttle bacchanalia, Toth's line-based figures reenact contemporary versions of initiation rites long since abandoned. They play at war to test strength, glavanize loyalty and challenge faith. They seek danger to establish glory. However, within this search there is an inherent violence that reveals a primal nature. Ultimately, their urge to destroy becomes their vehicle to defy limitations.
Toth's painting's of initiation are brought to live action in the supporting films - War Party and Pumpkins. These films portray the realization that vitality is fleeting and the body is fragile. In light of this truth, Toth's subjects find all the more reason to celebrate!

Beatriz Millar: EENA'S Formula
This performance and exhibition explores themes which have influenced and shaped her investigation of feminity: recalling the Great Mother, the primitive divinity who had the power to give and take away life, and who is transformed into the mothers, prostitutes, sorceresses, gypsies and prietesses in the works.
Millar discovers the female power of creation in the preparation of bread and in its offering up as nourishment. Through this simple gesture she investigates the roles which women have lost or acquired in contemporary societies, and also questions the border between intellectual and manual work, between art and craft.
SPECIAL SCREENING: Lux Mater - the video work that takes the viewer back to the starting-point of this exhibition - poetically and ironically reflecting on the processes of creation and transformation of elements.
PERFORMANCE: Beatriz Millar will be at Whitespace from Jan. 20th through Jan 27th. Particpate in this amazing performance and watch Beatriz bake her feminine goddesses. Sunday, Jan 27th 10AM at Whitespace.
